Review

Named after naturally occurring mega-storms on Jupiter, Jovian Storms unleashed their latest EP, “Umbra” on November 1st. The EP starts off with a reverbed mellow piano introduction before blasting off chanting-esque vocals and distant instrumentals with a lofi filter. Ambient spacey atmospheres are created with celestial synths, orchestral elements and fuzz-driven guitar tones. Jovian Storms quickly establishes a space-themed atmosphere as well as an experimental musical style with an emphasis on instrumentals.

“Voronoi” starts off with booming electronic drums, ricocheting synth pads, and clean guitar, as the song fulfills a progressive and experimental sound. Ambient sounds fill in the songs background as more prominent instrumentals take the forefront, creating a complex and satisfyingly full soundscape. Technical drumming and catchy instrumental leads make way for creative elements like vocal samples that remind of types of EDM and meditation music. The song heads in a heavier direction as it introduces hard-hitting distorted guitar tones before ending in a final eruption of sound.

“Vagrant Signal” leaps into action with a distorted “clipping” sound as lofi filters and talking samples soon transition into a more standard high clarity mix as funky bass lines, explosive drums, and crushing guitars take the stage. Switching between calmer ambient sections and harsh heavy-metal interludes, Jovian Storms excellently balances contrast between melody and destruction.

The 4th song “Sterenn Du” builds with droning synths that lead into technical drumming and intensely heavy guitar chugs as reverbed guitar tones fill in the background. Throughout the EP, Jovian Storms expertly creates an atmospheric space-reminiscent sound through the use of powerful reverb, delay, and synth/pad tones.

The final track “Neither Created Nor Destroyed” has a darker and more ominous tone as eerie brass tones follow ghastly strings and electronic beats. After a lofi build-up the song catapults into chunky metal riffage, ambient pads, racing drums and aggressive thumping bass. Jovian Storms reintroduces melodic piano in a bridge before turning to a Tool-esque progressive sound with clean guitar picking and drums that grow in anticipation. “Neither Created Nor Destroyed” jumps into the midst of dynamic hard rock instrumentals and an ambient melodic backbone.

Overall, “Umbra” is an impressive display of musicianship and space-inspired instrumental music that fans of progressive rock/metal, psychedelic, and experimental genres are certain to enjoy. You can stream Jovian Storms 5-track EP out now!
