Horrorcore Artist Pauzul Grotesque Announces New Music - Exclusive Interview

Starting in Los Angeles, California in late 2021, Pauzul Grotesque is a horrorcore (trap and horror) artist who grew up on bands like Cannibal Corpse and takes his extreme metal influences into trap music.

Pauzul Grotesque takes his personal experiences dealing with paranoid schizophrenia, drug abuse, and mental health issues, and uses them to write songs that are dark, genuine, and vulnerable. Taking inspiration from artists like $uicideboy$, Pauzul Grotesque takes trap and horrorcore influences and goes even further–including death metal growls/gutturals and screaming in his music.

Pauzul just announced that starting January 1st he will unleash a single every month until May 7th when his full-length album "Keys" will be released.

You can watch the official lyric video for his recent track "Benadryl" below.

With his sound that blends industrial trap, phonk, horrorcore, and extreme metal, Pauzul Grotesque is creating an equally exciting and eerie sound that fans of the aforementioned genres will certainly enjoy.

Following his October 2024 album, "Lead Me to My Past", Pauzul leaves listeners excited to see what comes next from the promising independent artist.

We talked to Pauzul Grotesque in an exclusive interview about his influences, story, and what's next for the artist below.

Exclusive Interview

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as dark and obscure with themes of a deep emotional core. Raw essence of struggle and triumph, addiction and sobriety, a battle between light and darkness. A haunting, captivating aim, to evoke a profound connection with those who listen.

What are your biggest influences?

I grew up listening to extreme metal music. Starting from Slipknot to Metallica, Kreator to Cannibal Corpse, Deicide to Immolation, Dissection to Necrophobic–and on and on to the deeper abyss. Although this type of music is my main go to, I dabble into some rap. I also grew up listening to 50 Cent, Eazy E, WC, Eminem, and T.I. but what really pushed me to start writing raps, was the $uicideboy$. Their hard-hitting productions and dark themes, reminds me of the extreme side of extreme metal. From $uicideboy$ to Shakewell, Lil Peep, BONES, and Pouya.

What is your music about and what does it mean to you?

It's an outlet. A journal to every step of the staircase. I get to listen back and see the improvements I've made since my dark days.

How did you start this music project and when?

I have always been into writing music. I've been in bands that never really played out. I didn't want to be held back by waiting on others. I just started my solo project. In 2020, It started off as a black metal project and is now a Rap project.

What is the story behind the name Pauzul Grotesque?

I'm a fan of Burzum. The Burzum band name came from black speech, the language of Mordor, in JJR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I'm also a fan of LOTR. “Pauzul” translates to Demon and “Grotesque” just rhymes with my last name.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music?

I am a filmmaker. I enjoy watching and creating motion pictures.

What is one band/artist you hope to collaborate/perform with in the future?

I'd love to collaborate with Shakewell. He is versatile and we have similar backgrounds. We both played bass guitar in different genres and now we are rapping.

What’s next for Pauzul Grotesque?

In 2025, I will be dropping music videos, hopefully start performing shows, and of course, music.

How has your experience been making music while dealing with paranoid schizophrenia/mental health issues? Has music helped you overcome challenges with your mental health?

Dealing with schizophrenia and writing music can be tough. When I write, I listen to the hallucinations and write out what I hear. I carry these messages from the beyond and tell them in a pattern. Having these negative words being spewed in my head tends to reflect onto my day. However, when the song is put together and rolling, I get a relief from my mind. It reminds me that I can get activities and work done. Diving to the dark side of my mind isn't so bad if I'm achieving my goals.
