Review

Starting in 2021, These Cursed Hands created their brand of blackened metalcore. The brutal act just released their latest 8 track album, “Intelligent (RE)Design”. 30 second intro track “Advent” begins with ominous ambience and distorted talking samples before bursting into track 2, “Extermination Revelation” with an intensified resolve. Explosively heavy guitar chugs are met with tremolo guitar leads and crushingly powerful black metal-esque extreme metal screams. The song changes tempos abruptly, rushing into blast beats, rapid guitar riffage, and fiercely harsh screams. In an unexpected turn of events, the song fades into a clean bridge with a progressive sound before launching into a final onslaught of metal.

“Murderous Intent” catapults the listener directly into speeding thrash riffs and blast beats, before jumping into a brutally intense breakdown with a sample from the intro track “Advent”. These Cursed Hands show an expert display of musical style that mixes sounds from old-school black metal, thrash, metalcore, and death metal in a ferociously heavy package that fans of all sorts of extreme metal subgenres will enjoy.

“Onset” acts as a short interlude with droning synths, whispering samples, and an overall dark and ambient sound before introducing the next full length song, “Obsolete Beings”. These Cursed Hands launch into speeding instrumentals again before unexpectedly jumping into a hard-hitting death metal reminiscent breakdown. After a demonic sample states “Your Existence is Unnecesary” the song transitions into goblin-like deathcore style screams and groove-metal drums while pinch harmonics cut through the mix. After a soaring guitar solo the song ends with a boom, finishing out with a crushingly-heavy breakdown.

The 6th track, “Perihelion” starts with progressive drums and clean guitar before quickly bringing out the big guns with These Cursed Hands distinctly brutal vocals and black metal guitar tones. “Perihilion” showcases a more progressive and technical instrumental sound as speeding tempos and low-end heavy chugs still hold down the destructively intense rhythm. These Cursed Hands excellently balance contrast between clean and heavy sections in “Perihelion” displaying multiple dimensions to their sound and keeping things wildly interesting.

“Collapse” features a siren and more news styled commentation to interlude the album before moving into the final song of the album, “Event Horizon”. With a booming drum fill, These Cursed Hands throw listeners into the midst of racing drums and bright black metal guitar tones. “Event Horizon” seems to take a more classic deathcore sound that may remind listeners of nostalgic 2000s MySpace era deathcore. In a totally unexpected switch-up, These Cursed Hands introduce the song’s bridge with singing female vocals that build as the full band’s onslaught is reintroduced overtop of the clean vocals.

Overall, “Intelligent (RE)Design” is an impressive display of extreme metal that mixes black metal, metalcore, deathcore, and death metal in an attractively intense sound. These Cursed Hands bring a sense of nostalgia with their music while still bringing a modern and distinctly unique sound to the table. You can stream “Intelligent (RE)Design” out everywhere now!
