Annex Void Debut Song Review + Exclusive Interview

Annex Void Debut Song Review + Exclusive Interview
Annex Void - Spotify Cover

Michigan-forged metal act, Annex Void, released their debut song "Past Future Illusion" on December 14th. Clocking in just under 4 minutes, the track starts with gentle guitar strumming and an ambient background before introducing progressive guitar melodies and drum work. In a sudden shift, Annex Void launches into djenty guitar buildups and distorted guitar chugging. Harsh screams cut through the mix with haunting reverb working to create a powerful and atmospheric soundscape.

"Past Future Illusion" transitions to melodic guitar and ambient singing vocals in a clean bridge that forms a fresh and varied sound in the song. Technical low-tuned guitar riffage layers over singing, creating an impressive display of instrumentalism. In an unexpected and aggressive breakdown, Annex Void launches the listener into a brutal breakdown before gradually fading out the song.

Fans of metalcore, djent, and progressive metal will be sure to enjoy Annex Void's sound! With an exciting display with their first single, Annex Void leaves us interested to hear more.

Interview:

How would you describe your music?

The group seamlessly weaves diverse musical elements, including dense harmony, IDM, and ambient sounds. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres such as metal (Deftones, Meshuggah, & Loathe), contemporary jazz (Allan Holdsworth, Brian Blade, Dave Binney), and electronic music (Autchre, Machinedrum, & Squarepusher).  Annex Void crafts a distinctive sound and innovative style.

What are the Annex Void's biggest influences?

Meshuggah, Deftones, Loathe, squarepusher, Autchre, car bomb, clown core, and machine drum.

What is the "Past Future Illusion" about?

Past Future is about the struggle with mental health and the forever-feeding cycle of past emotions conflicting with future emotions.

How did the band form/when?

In Autumn 2021 Annex formed due to similar interests and all knowing each other.

If you could open a show for any artist at any venue who or where would it be and why?

Opening for Loathe at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. We all really dig loathe, and even had the pleasure of meeting a few of the members.

What is your favorite show you’ve played?

We haven’t played a show yet but we are set to have our debut show on 1/27 at Ziggys in Ypsi with some friends.

What is the story behind your band name?

"Annex" refers to the act of incorporating or joining something new, while "void" notes an empty or undefined space. Together, "Annex Void" represents the merging or annexation of musical creativity. The resulting creation of an unexplored musical genre of its own. It signifies breaking free from conventional boundaries of genres and venturing into uncharted musical territories. - Annex Void

What is your least favorite part of the music business?

Musicians having to compensate our hard work and talents in the name of “exposure”.

Do you have any upcoming shows, songs, collaborations or something like that you are excited for and can share?

Annex Void will be releasing our second single & our full EP very soon.

What is a style of music you like outside of rock/metal?

We are super into Contemporary jazz, electronic music, and fusion.

What does the band enjoy doing outside of music?

Playing video games, listening to music, hiking, and going out for drinks together.

What inspired the band to start making music?

We all have various musical backgrounds and reasons for wanting to play/make this music. We are all like-minded individuals and collaborate well together.

What is your creative process when creating new music?

The process starts with an idea written in Musecore or Logic, then we demo it and flesh out the fine details as a group.
